I've been working long enough to have started in a decade where everyone about the junior had an office. Smoking was also standard. Then came the decade of open plan. Facebook's new office campus has caused a stir with reports that staff stay at home if they want to get anything done.
I agree with Cal Newport. If your business is about looking after smart people, why not invest to get the best out of them? It's an example of taking industrialisation of the corporation too far.
But if I was investing a large amount of capital into human brains, I think I would increase this investment by just a little bit more (relatively speaking) to give the brains an environment where they could produce for me the most valuable possible output.
